Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why are my teeth yellow and discolored?

Believe it or not, yellowing teeth are part of the natural aging process. As you get older, the outer shell of your teeth, or enamel, chips, cracks, and flakes away. Over time, this reveals the inner portion of your tooth called the dentin. Dentin is naturally yellow in color. Your teeth appear increasingly yellow as more dentin becomes visible.

Other factors can also contribute to yellow or discolored teeth, including:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Using tobacco
  • Drinking dark-colored beverages
  • Eating tomato-based foods

You might also develop yellow teeth as a result of taking certain prescription medications, like those with tetracycline.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a type of cosmetic dentistry that uses medical-grade bleaching chemicals to remove stains from the surface of your teeth. The majority of modern teeth whitening treatments use carbamide peroxide as their main ingredient. Carbamide peroxide is a byproduct of hydrogen peroxide. It’s capable of safely and effectively removing stains and other visible imperfections.

What types of teeth whitening do you offer?

The team offers two different types of teeth whitening:

In-office laser teeth whitening

At 63rd Street Dental, the team uses Philips Zoom! chairside whitening. This cutting-edge treatment can make your teeth up to eight* shades whiter in just one session. During Philips Zoom! Teeth whitening, your dentist covers your gums and tongue with a rubber dam and carefully applies a bleaching solution to the surface of your teeth. After the solution dries, your dentist points a special light at your teeth that triggers a chemical bleaching process. Your dentist repeats these steps 3-4 times, a process that usually takes no longer than 90 minutes.

Take-home teeth whitening trays

If you want to whiten your teeth from the convenience of your own home, the team also offers take-home teeth whitening trays. Whitening trays deliver optimal amounts of whitening gel to the surface and contours of each tooth, providing better, faster results than over-the-counter products.

Which teeth whitening treatment is right for me?

To determine the type of teeth whitening treatment you’ll most benefit from, make an appointment with the team at 63rd Street Dental.
